Antifragility Research: The 2026 Scoping Review

Adversity can make you stronger. That is a testable claim, not a slogan.

So we tested it against the human research and wrote down what held up and what did not. No hand-waving, no selling.

What the review set out to do

Antifragility proposes something conventional thinking resists: that adversity is not merely to be survived, but can be actively used to promote growth.

The concept has spread fast and unevenly. It has been applied to robotics, logistics, urban water infrastructure, machine learning and financial markets, often more rigorously than it has been applied to people. So we screened the literature and split it in two.

The goal was to answer three questions honestly:

What the evidence supports

Finding: antifragility is proactive, not reactive.

Resilience is about what happens to you and how you recover. Antifragility, as it appears across the studies, involves stressors being intentionally engaged in order to strengthen capability. It is something you do on purpose.

Finding: the mechanism has roots in more than one discipline.

Biological concepts like hormesis, where a small dose of a stressor triggers an adaptive response that leaves the system stronger, and psychological frameworks like post-traumatic growth both align with mechanisms relevant to growth through adversity.

Finding: it shows up across mental health, performance and quality of life.

Not in one narrow lane.

Finding: robust, resilient and antifragile are three different things.

Collapsing them is the single most common error in how the idea gets used.

What it does not show, yet

This is the section most research pages leave out. It is the reason this one is worth reading.

The empirical base is thin.

In the review's own words, empirical studies remain scarce. Eighteen human-systems studies is a small literature. Anyone telling you antifragility is settled science is selling something.

We lack good measurement.

The review explicitly calls for robust measurement tools. You cannot reliably train what you cannot reliably measure, and the field is not there yet.

We lack longitudinal evidence.

The review calls for longitudinal designs. Most of what exists is cross-sectional or conceptual, so claims about antifragility developing over time currently outrun the data.

We do not agree on what kind of thing it is.

The review names, as a future direction, the need to refine antifragility as a state, a trait, or a process. That foundational question is open.

We do not know the dose.

Well-dosed pressure is the core of the practical claim, and the review calls for dose-specific models, meaning the models do not yet exist. How much pressure, programmed how, for whom, is unanswered.

So what should you take from this?

That antifragility is a well-motivated, cross-disciplinary idea with a real mechanism and a genuinely early evidence base. The right direction, not a finished science. We will always tell you which is which.

Why we published it, and what we do with it

We work with executives, athletes, teams and first responders on performing under pressure. That work should be accountable to evidence, and where the evidence runs out, we should say so rather than fill the gap with confidence. The review is also a map of what to build next: measurement, longitudinal designs, and dose-specific models. That is our research agenda.
